Pharmacokinetics (PK) deals with the determination of the fate of substances administered to a living organism. Substances of interest may include xenobiotics such as pharmaceutical, pesticides, or other drugs. PK aims to analyze the outcome of drug metabolism in order to reveal the fate of a xenobiotic from the time of administration up to its clearance from the body. In effect, PK is the study of how an organism affects the xenobiotic, whereas pharmacodynamics (PD) is the study of how the drug affects the organism. Both fields are considered for the selection of dosing and adverse effects, as seen in PK/PD studies.
In detail PK can also describe mechanisms of absorption and distribution, metabolic changes of the administered drug in the body, including the effects of metabolic enzymes (cytochrome P450 or other enzymes), and the effects and routes of excretion of the drug and its metabolites. Pharmacokinetic properties of chemicals are greatly dependent on the route and dose of administration.
