Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) deals with the measurement of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in biological fluids, mainly blood. Its main focus is on drugs with a narrow therapeutic window. TDM aims at improving patient care by adjusting the dose of drugs or the drug regimen to assist clinicians in decision making to achieve improved clinical outcome. TDM is widely used for the measurement of concentrations of drugs in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD).

Examples of drugs analysed by therapeutic drug monitoring:

  • Aminoglycoside and other types of antibiotics
  • Antiepileptics
  • Mood stabilizers
  • Antipsychotics
  • Biologic monoclonal antibody drugs
